General information for tenants

Your Tenancy Agreement covers the legal terms and conditions of your tenancy. It confirms you are a tenant of the Association and sets out the rights and obligations of Harding and the tenant. You should always keep your tenancy agreement in a safe place.

The Tenants' Charter is a set of guidelines and rules, provided by the Housing Corporation, that all Housing Associations must agree to. It is a document for tenants that gives information about the management of your home. It is given to every tenant when they sign their Tenancy Agreement.

Paying your rent

Rent is due weekly in advance as shown on your tenancy agreement. If you do not pay regularly, and on time, you could lose your home.

Rent may be paid weekly, fortnightly or monthly but must be paid in advance.

You can pay by:

  • Cash or cheque at a post office: using a swipe card issued by the Association. This service is free.
  • Standing Order: You may pay by standing order from a bank, building society or Post Office Giro account.
  • Cash or cheque via a bank: At Barclays Bank this service is free. If you use another bank you may be charged for this service.
  • Cheque at one of our offices: either in person or through the post. Please note our offices cannot accept cash.
  • Housing Benefit direct: if you are receiving Housing Benefit, we may ask for it to be paid direct to us. To find out more about Housing Benefit please click here.

Rent statements are sent out quarterly but you may request one at any time.

Housing Benefit

If you are on low income you may be eligible for Housing Benefit which helps towards the cost of the rent. Housing Benefit is paid by the local authority, either direct to the tenant, or to the Association. It may cover all or part of the rent depending on your financial situation.

Your Housing Officer is trained to provide benefits advice and can help you if you have difficulty completing the application form or are having problems with the Housing Benefit department. Although we will do everything we can to help, we cannot be held responsible for any query or dispute that arises between the tenant and local council.

You can get an application form from your local authority Housing Benefits department. Contact numbers are listed below. Deaf tenants should use the fax number, if no minicom number is shown.
